I don't think the quality of everything has gone down, It is just more difficult to find those top quality, higher end "widgets" now. Most “big name” national stores and websites will carry widgets in the lower price and lower quality range, whereas ten years ago the same type of store might carry a low, a mid and a high end widget and let the customer make the choice.

The easiest way to lower the price is to cut corners and reduce the overall quality. The materials used in products has a drastic effect on the price and longevity of that item. If a product has stainless steel in it and you switch to regular steel or even plastics, sure the price will go down, as does the overall quality. You may not even notice until you start to see the rust or the product breaks in a couple months.
